Art & Soul: Mangalore’s Local Artists in Modern Homes
Art in Interiors: Showcasing Local Mangalore Artists in Home Design
Ever walked into a home and felt something missing despite all the perfect furniture and fancy decor? That’s exactly what I felt in a beautiful Kadri apartment last month until we added the finishing touch – a stunning Yakshagana-inspired painting by a local artist. The space suddenly came alive with personality and meaning!
Local Art, Local Stories
Just yesterday, a client visited our Kadri studio looking for something “unique” for her walls. “Kshema,” she sighed, “I’m tired of mass-produced art that could be anywhere in the world.” That’s when I showed her our collection of collaborations with Mangalorean artists. Her eyes lit up seeing familiar scenes and cultural elements interpreted in contemporary ways.
More Than Just Decor
One of my favourite transformations was in a Falnir home where we incorporated a series of Kaavi art-inspired pieces. The homeowner’s grandmother actually recognised patterns from her childhood temple visits! It’s these connections that make a house truly feel like home.
Modern Interpretations
Remember those traditional Guttu house mural designs? In a recent project near Valencia, we worked with a local artist to create a modern interpretation for an office wall. The result? A conversation starter that bridges generations and tells our city’s story in a contemporary voice.
Supporting Local Talent
There’s something special about knowing the artist who created your home’s centrepiece. Last month, we collaborated with a young artist from Mangaladevi who creates beautiful seascapes using coffee! Her work now graces a stunning accent wall in a beachfront apartment, perfectly capturing our coastal essence.
Art That Works
Here’s how we’re integrating local art thoughtfully:
- Commission pieces that complement your colour scheme
- Scale artwork appropriately for your space
- Consider lighting that enhances without damaging
- Choose themes that resonate with your family’s story
Beyond Paintings
Art isn’t just about what hangs on walls. We recently worked with:
- A local potter for unique wall installations
- Traditional Yakshagana mask makers for statement pieces
- Kola craft artisans for contemporary room dividers
- Metal artists creating modern interpretations of traditional motifs
The Personal Touch
One of my most memorable projects was helping a family display their grandfather’s sketch collection of old Mangalore. We created a gallery wall mixing his historical drawings with commissioned pieces showing the same locations today. The before-and-after story of our city, right there on their walls!
Getting It Right
Selecting art is perhaps the most personal aspect of design. A client in Attavar insisted on having only abstract art, but wanted it to reflect local elements. We connected her with an artist who creates contemporary pieces using traditional tiger dance movements as inspiration. The result? Stunning modern art with deep local roots.
Making Art Work
Here’s a little secret – we love creating entire room schemes around a special piece of art. In a recent Bejai project, a vibrant Togalu Gombeyaata-inspired artwork set the tone for the whole living room palette. The space feels both modern and meaningfully connected to our culture.
